Reach for the Stars – Year 1 – 8
The ‘Reach for the Stars’ Junior Netball Programme is a skills-based in-school programme for all Year 1 – 8 students. The programme focuses on the development of tamariki’s fundamental movements and basic Netball skills through fun and engaging activities. Through ‘Reach for the Stars’, we aim to increase participation in our Future Ferns Netball Competition within our community.
The ‘Reach for the Stars’ programme is delivered across three 20 – 30-minute sessions which enables the students to grasp the new skills in bite-sized chunks, before putting them all together into modified gameplay.
Session 1 – Movement (Jumping, Landing, Balance)
Session 2 – Ball Skills (Passing, Catching, Shooting)
Session 3 – Game Play (Rules, Positions)
Our Reach for the Stars programme runs all year round and has a small cost of $5 per child for THREE sessions. Booking Forms are sent through to the school’s Sports coordinator or Netball director.
Term 1 – Year 7 – 8 Students
Term 2 – Year 1 – 4 Students
Term 3 – Year 5 – 6 Students
Term 4 – Year 1 – 4 Students
Rules in Schools – Junior Umpire Programme
The Netball Manawatu Rules in Schools – Junior Umpire Programme aims to increase the confidence and knowledge of our junior umpires in the Manawatu region. The in-school programme focuses on providing opportunities for all umpires to improve on their theory and practical aspects of their umpiring.
The programme is delivered in schools across five theory sessions and at least five practical sessions. The sessions are 30-40 minutes and are structured around activities and engagement that will increase their knowledge and confidence.
Term 2
Session 1: Introduction to Umpiring (Pre-game & Area of the Court)
Session 2: Rules & Hand Signals (Minor & major Infringements)
Term 3:
Session 3: Reading the Game (Position, Vision & Timing)
Session 4: Scoring (Odds & Evens)
The Junior Umpire Programme is delivered Before and After School. Booking Forms are sent through to the school’s Sports coordinator or Netball director.
There is NO cost for the Programme. Umpires will require a Whistle
Student Coach Development Programme
The Student Coach Development programme aims to provide support and guidance for student coaches in the Netball Manawatu Netball community. It focuses on creating a safe environment to foster growth and learning - leading to the retention of coaches.
This is a SIX-session programme for all Netball Student Coaches. Slots are limited so be sure to book your school in promptly. There is NO Cost for the Programme!
Term 1: Pre-season Connect (Session 1)
Term 2: During Season Connect (Session 2, 3 & 4)
Term 3: During Season Connect (Session 5)
Term 4: Post-Season Connect (Session 6)
The Student Coach Development Programme is delivered Before and Afterschool on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There is NO cost for the Programme. Booking Forms are sent through to the school’s Sports coordinator or Netball director.
Prep n Play Netball Smart Programme
The NetballSmart ‘Prep n Play’ Programme aims to provide support to secondary school players in their preparation for the up-and-coming netball season. The programme focuses on utilising NetballSmart to help build strength, master stability, and increase fitness – all while having FUN.
The programme is delivered in schools across four 45 – 60-minute sessions and is structured to include the following components.
The Prep n Play programme will only be delivered in Term 1 for Year 10 – 13 students. There is NO cost for the Prep n Play Programme. Booking Forms are sent through to the school’s Sports coordinator or Netball director.

Secondary School Skills Programme
The Netball Manawatu Secondary School Skills programme is a new programme that aims to provide opportunities to all secondary school players to learn and develop their netball skills while having fun.
The programme is delivered in schools across 3 – 4 sessions for Year 9 – 13 Students, who would not usually have the opportunity to train. The sessions are 45 – 60 minutes and are structured around activities and engagement that will increase the retention of Secondary school players in Netball.
Term 2 – Year 11 – 13 Students (4 Sessions)
Session 1 – Movement (Jumping, Landing, Balance)
Session 2 – Ball Skills (Passing, Catching, Shooting)
Session 3 – Movement (Change of Direction, Pivoting, Defence)
Session 4 – Game Play (Rules, Positions)
Term 3 – Year 9 – 10 Students (3 Sessions)
Session 1 – Movement (Jumping, Landing, Balance)
Session 2 – Ball Skills (Passing, Catching, Shooting)
Session 3 – Game Play (Rules, Positions)
The Secondary School Skills Programme is delivered at Lunchtime and Afternoons in school. There is NO cost for the Programme. Booking Forms are sent through to the school’s Sports coordinator or Netball director.
Boys in Netball
The Boys in Netball programme is designed to give boys the opportunity to have a taster of Netball and to help build up a relationship with Netball Manawatū to provide them with a pathway in Netball.
Throughout this programme the students will learn fundamental movements and basic Netball skills through fun and engaging game- like activities that get the students to think, explore and develop through working together to learn collaboratively.
The 'Boys in Netball' programme is delivered over 6- weeks, with Weeks 1- 5 being 30min learning sessions and Week 6 will be a festival day where all schools who have participated in the programme can come together and practice what they have learnt, while meeting lots of other boys who are interested in playing netball to make new friends and develop a community of boys and males in Netball.
The Focus for each Session will be:
Week 1- Balance and Passing
Week 2- Shooting and Pivoting
Week 3- Dodging and Defence
Week 4- Take- off & Stop and Ball Skills
Week 5- Practice for festival day
Week 6- Festival Day
